White on Rice: A love poem for dishes
Our dishwasher is broken so I was doing the dishes tonight when it occurred to me exactly how much I love our plates, with their rudimentary, yet still somehow elegant pattern—just a thin blue line around the porcelain white circumference—and a Crate and Barrel logo stamped on their backs.

My Mum’s dishes are white with a simple black line around the edge. I know which tea cups my Dad liked, and I still wonder why my Mum didn’t just give them to him in the divorce because I know they just sit in the cupboard untouched. Whenever I go home, I am always a little sad somehow if there are new dishes in the cupboard. Dishes do mean alot.
